Ceann Sléibhe sits on the western edge of the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry. It’s a promontory you reach via the R559. The nearest villages are Ballyickeen and Coumeenoole. The rock here is distinct. Steeply dipping beds of pebbly sandstones and conglomerates make up the Slea Head Formation. These Devonian layers, often called the old red sandstone, dip out of the hillside. They form the layered cliff face that defines the headland’s look.
The Blasket Islands lie out west, fully visible across the water. This makes Slea Head a major viewpoint. To the northwest is Dunmore Head, the westernmost point of Ireland. The area has a history of maritime tragedy. On 11 March 1982, the Spanish container ship Ranga was wrecked at Dunmore Head. It lost power in a storm near Slea Head. That event is one reason the headland is known far beyond the peninsula.
The Slea Head Drive is one of the Dingle Peninsula’s most scenic routes. It loops out to the headland and back through oratory country. Several landmarks sit along the way. Ventry Beach has a pre-historic fort and beehive huts. You’ll also see the Dingle Famine Cottage. Coumenole Beach offers another stretch of coastline. Gallarus Oratory marks the return leg. The loop brings you back towards Dingle. It’s a full day’s shape: out to the cliffs, back through the history, home by the light.
The headland is a short drive from Dingle along the R559. Ballyickeen and Coumeenoole are the closest stops. The view of the Blaskets is the main draw. Morning light works best here. It comes across the water and lights up the islands clearly.
