Carna

The place

Carna sits on the west coast in County Galway. It is part of the Gaeltacht, roughly 74 km west of Galway city. The area is tiny. Yet it acts as the hub for the surrounding far-west country.

You will find a Garda Síochána station here. There is also a Health Centre, which includes a Rapid Response Ambulance. A football pitch and an Irish Coastguard lifeboat complete the set. The history in the numbers

The population fell sharply. Before the Great Famine, the average was 8,000. The Famine took the young people and the numbers. The average age of a resident now is significantly higher than the Irish national average. What remains is the older country of the west. The loss is written into the landscape. The university in the west

NUI Galway runs an Irish-language and educational centre here. It is called Áras Shorcha Ní Ghuairim. You'll find it in Roisín na Mainiach, near Carna. The university also operates the Martin Ryan Institute, a marine biology station in Maínis. An atmospheric research station sits at Mace Head, Carna. The experimental physics department runs that station. These research sites give the place a second life. The marine station is on the coast. The physics station is on the headland. The Irish-language centre sits in the village country between them.

Practical

Carna is 74 km from Galway city on the west coast of Connemara. The lifeboat and research stations make good days out. The bog country is there for walking. The ground is open with no cover. Check the forecast before you travel. Tracks are rough underfoot when wet.
