Roundstone

Roundstone, known locally as "seal's rock," sits on Roundstone Bay opposite Inishnee. The village serves as a creative hub and hosts a July regatta, anchored by a distinctive round rock at the bay's entrance.

The village

Cloch na Rón translates to “seal's rock” in Irish. The village sits on the west coast of County Galway, within the Connemara region. It faces the island of Inishnee across Roundstone Bay. By road, the distance to Galway is 76 kilometres northwest. Clifden is 18 kilometres to the southeast. Artists and creatives have made this their base. An annual regatta takes place in July. The boats, the bay, and the round rock that gives the place its name define the scene.

The name that went wrong

The anglicised name likely stems from an error by the British colonial Ordnance Survey. They translated the village name incorrectly. Cloch definitely means “stone” or “rock”. Rón, however, means “seal”, not “round”. The two names might be totally independent. Roderick O'Flaherty referred to the water as Round-stone Haven as early as 1684. The rock at the bay's entrance is strikingly round. It stands like a marker. The identity of the place rests on the seal, the rock, and the water. The story of how the mapmakers got it wrong is part of that identity.

The water in front of it

The bay acts as the village's front garden. Roundstone Bay sweeps around behind the settlement. Inishnee lies out across the water. July brings the regatta, a day when the bay belongs to the village. The walk along the quay is the one people actually take. You see the boats, the rock at the mouth, and the evening light on the water. The village works as a base for the west-coast coves of Connemara. The headlands, lifeboat country, and bays form the landscape the coast road runs through.

Practical

Roundstone sits on the coast road between Clifden and the Carna country. It is 18 km from Clifden and 76 km from Galway. The quay and the bay are right in the village. The regatta runs in July. Confirm the current dates before travelling. The cove walks are open ground. Check the forecast first.
