The town

Oranmore (Órán Mór or Uarán Mór in Irish) is a town in County Galway, Ireland, 9 km east of Galway city on an inlet of Galway Bay. The 2022 census counted a population of 5,819. It sits within a civil parish of the same name.

The town marks where the estuary country meets the city. Water sits in front. Fields stretch behind. Most visitors walk down to the inlet first.

The name

Oranmore is the anglicisation of Uarán Mór or Órán Mór. The first written record appears in the Annals of the Four Masters. The original name was Fuarán Mór, meaning “great spring” in Irish.

This name refers to a spring or well near the village. It captures the water, the estuary, and the town itself. The Annals entry is the place's first line in the history.

The prehistoric ground

Evidence of prehistoric settlement in the Oranmore Parish area includes a number of fulacht fiadh. These ancient cooking mounds are at Frenchfort townland. Ringforts sit at Rinn townland. A megalithic structure is at Garraun South townland.

The parish ground is the town's older country. It holds the cooking mounds, the forts, and the megalith. Walking out to the townlands takes in this prehistoric place. The estuary in front of the town is the country the parish has always faced. It offers the water, the birds, and the light on the inlet.

Practical

Oranmore is 9 km east of Galway city, on an inlet of Galway Bay. Walks to the fulacht fiadh and the ringforts start out of the town. The estuary is in front of it.

The town works as the quiet place on the bay between the city and the west. Mornings bring the water. Afternoons bring the fields.
