Gort sits in County Galway between the Burren and Slieve Aughty, named after the "field of Guaire's island." The town features Bronze Age fort remains in Coole Park, along with local ringforts and holy wells.
An Gort. That’s the Irish name, short for Gort Inse Guaire. It’s a place of roughly 2,800 people in County Galway, tucked against the Clare border. The R458 and R460 run through it, linking the town to the M18 motorway. Geographically, it sits in the gap between two distinct landscapes. The karst terrain of the Burren lies to the north. The limestone hills of the Slieve Aughty rise to the south. Gort is the meeting point where those two countries touch.
The full Irish title breaks down into three parts. Gort means a meadow or field. Inse refers to an island. Guaire is a personal name. Put together, it translates to “field of Guaire's island.” The name isn’t just a label; it describes the physical layout of the place. It captures the field, the island, and the man who lent his name to the area. Walking through the town is walking through that specific history.
The area holds evidence of ancient life. You’ll find ringforts, souterrains, and holy wells in the townlands of Gort, Ballyhugh, Cloghnakeava, Cloonnahaha, and Lavally. In 2022, archaeologists investigated a large Bronze Age fort in Coole Park. The dating places it between 800 and 1200 BCE. That’s three thousand years of history sitting in the earthworks near the town. These sites form the older layer of the local landscape. The walk out to them is the standard way to see that history.
Gort works well as a base for exploring the region. It’s close to the Clare border and sits on the R458/R460, with easy access to the M18. The townlands around the town hold the ringforts and wells. You can spend the morning on the fields and the afternoon in the hills. The Burren’s eastern edge and the Slieve Aughty country are both within reach from this central point.
