Gleann Cholm Cille is a small Gaeltacht district in County Donegal named for Saint Colm Cille. It features the village of Cashel, sandy Atlantic beaches, and a coast where Irish remains a daily language for many residents.
Gleann Cholm Cille sits on the Atlantic coast of south-west County Donegal. In English, you might hear Glencolmcille or Glencolumbkille. It is a civil parish in the historic barony of Banagh. The name comes from Saint Colm Cille, the Columba of Iona.
This is a Gaeltacht area. Irish is still spoken here, though the numbers have shifted. By 2002, only about a third of residents used the language daily. Cashel is the main village. It is a compact place where the coast, the valley, and the local history all fit into a short walk.
The earliest records use different terms. Glend just means “glen”. Senglenn translates to “old glen”. The current name, “the valley of Colm Cille”, came later. It was likely fixed in the fifteenth century.
The first full record appears in Maghnas Ó Domhnaill’s life of Columba from 1532. The name holds a saint’s story. That story sits in the landscape around the village. You can see it in the beaches, the headlands, and the small settlements along the shore.
The Atlantic shore is the main draw. There are sandy beaches and the headlands between them. The sea here does what the sea does on the west coast of Ireland. It is unpredictable and powerful.
Walks along the shore are the best use of the day. They are quiet and wide. Go early, before the afternoon wind builds. The water is the attraction, but the weather sets the rules. These two elements define the place.
Use Cashel as the base. The district pairs well with the rest of the Banagh coast. Carndonagh is to the north. The glens are to the south. This makes for a full touring day. Allow a morning for the beaches and the walk between them.
