The town

Known in Irish as Bun Dobhráin, the town sits at the foot of the Doran River. The name translates to “the foot of the little water”. It is County Donegal’s most southerly town, located near the N15 road close to Ballyshannon. Tourism has driven the local economy since the eighteenth century. The townland of Magheracar holds the Franciscan house of Bundrowes, or Bun Drobhaoise. This house matters for a specific reason. Mícheál Ó Cléirigh used it as his principal base during the 1630s. He was compiling the Annals of the Four Masters there.

The surf

The water is the main draw. National Geographic listed Bundoran as one of the world’s top 20 surf towns in 2012. The beaches along the Doran River mouth offer the waves, wind, and conditions that define the town. The area has a deep maritime heritage. The historic Bundrowes fishery in Magheracar anchored the local community. The town grew from that coastal base into a significant watering place and seaside resort.

The coast

The town marks the point where the coast road leaves the bay for the open Atlantic. The drive from Bundoran covers the best stretch of the south-west Donegal coast. You see the water, the headlands, and small settlements. The light on the coast in the late afternoon is distinct. The town acts as a base that makes the coast easy to access. It is a stop that stands on its own.

Practical

Allow a full day. Spend the morning at the beach. Take the coast road in the afternoon. Pair the trip with the Bluestacks for a complete touring day.
