The town
Lahinch comes from Leath Inse, which translates to “half island” or peninsula. In Irish, An Leacht refers to “the memorial cairn of O’Connor.” The town sits on the northwest coast of County Clare, perched on Liscannor Bay. It’s a small seaside resort, but its reputation for surfing has pushed its name well beyond the county. You’ll find the Lahinch Golf Club here, along with the beach that draws the Atlantic swell.
The location is specific: it lies on the N67 national secondary road. Milltown Malbay is one way, Ennistymon the other. By road, Galway is roughly 75 kilometres to the southwest. Limerick sits 68 kilometres to the northwest. These distances matter if you’re planning a day trip from either city.
The name
The anglicised name, Lahinch, sticks to the “half island” meaning. It’s not related to Leacht Uí Chonchubhair, or “O’Connor’s Grave.” That cairn marks the burial site of an O’Connor chieftain. They were the ruling clan of the district of Corco Modhruadh Iartharach. Historical records in the Annals of the Four Masters list the town as Leith Innse, a variant of the Irish name.
The geography explains the name. Liscannor Bay sweeps around behind the settlement. The beach is the point of the trip for most surfers. The bay is the town.
The position
The N67 runs behind the town, connecting Milltown Malbay and Ennistymon. This makes Lahinch the beach town of the Clare coast’s inner bay. The Atlantic swell arrives around the headland. The golf course sits above the beach. From here, the road heads west toward the Burren country. Eastward, it leads to the Shannon estuary.
A day out of Lahinch usually involves three things: the surf, the golf, or a walk along the bay. The town acts as the base for all three.
Practical
Lahinch is on the N67 between Milltown Malbay and Ennistymon. It’s roughly 75 km southwest of Galway and 68 km northwest of Limerick. The beach and the golf club are both in the town. Surf conditions depend on the right swell and tide. Check the forecast before you go. The beach works in any settled weather.
