Dunree Head

Dunree is a small townland in north-west Inishowen featuring a short cliff-top walk with views of the Atlantic and the lough. The area offers a quiet, direct experience suitable for a quick stop during a touring day.

The headland

Dunree sits in north-west Inishowen, County Donegal. It belongs to the civil parish of Desertegney. The townland covers about 0.8 square kilometres. At the 2011 census, 33 people lived there. The headland defines the place. It rises above the settlement where the coast bends. The open Atlantic lies on one side. The lough sits on the other. It is a small spot in every way. The walk is brief. The settlement is tiny. The view is the point.

The walk

Getting to the cliff top is the main task. It is short and direct. Go before the wind picks up. From the top, the coast runs out to the headland. The water drops away on both sides. There is a specific quiet here. It comes from a place with thirty-three residents. That silence is the draw. The walk is not long. It does not need to be. The headland does the work.

The country

This is north-west Inishowen in its proper form. You see the townlands, the small settlements, the cliff, and the water. It is a coast easy to pass but hard to forget. The headland is where you stop to look properly. Pair it with the lough and the Inishowen villages. That makes for a full touring day.

Practical

Allow an hour for the walk and the headland. Base yourself in the Inishowen villages to the south. Treat the headland as a stop. It is not a destination that requires a stay.
