Tayto Park

Emerald Park, formerly Tayto Park, combines a theme park and zoo on a fifty-five-acre site near Ashbourne in Co. Meath. Opened in 2010, the venue features over forty-five attractions, including the Cú Chulainn rollercoaster and a resident animal collection.

The park

Tayto Park sits near Ashbourne in County Meath. It is Ireland’s only theme park. It also houses the country’s only park zoo. That combination makes it a proper day out, not a half-day. The site opened in 2010. A local entrepreneur developed the fifty-five-acre ground. Today, more than forty-five rides and attractions spread across the grounds. In January 2023, the Tayto name partnership ended. The park rebranded as Emerald Park. Most people still call it Tayto Park. You will hear the old name on the road.

The rides

The lineup runs from gentle family coasters to the headline attraction: the Cú Chulainn rollercoaster. This steel ride is just over a kilometre long. It gives the park most of its reputation. Water rides run in the warmer months. Smaller rides cater to younger children. This spread makes the place work for families with a mix of ages.

The zoo

The zoo runs through the park, not beside it. Big cats, giraffes, and a range of smaller animals live here. Feeding sessions happen on most open days. A visit can stretch from an afternoon to a full day because of the animals. The zoo works best on a grey day.

When to go

The park follows a seasonal calendar. The longest runs cover summer and the school holidays. Summer weekends and holiday periods are the busiest times. Operating days usually run from about ten in the morning to five in the afternoon. Check the official calendar before you travel. It is a long drive from most bases.

Practical

Entry is ticketed. Family tickets and online booking are available. Booking ahead is usually cheaper and skips the queue. Parking is on site. Allow two to three hours for the rides. Plan a full day if you do the zoo. Drogheda is the nearest proper town, about thirty minutes away. Dublin is about forty minutes by car. A day trip is a sensible option for people based in the capital.
