Portmagee, known locally as “the ferry,” sits on the Iveragh peninsula in County Kerry. It is the crossing point to Valentia Island via the Maurice O’Neill Memorial Bridge and the summer departure point for Skellig Islands boats.
Portmagee sits on the Iveragh peninsula in County Kerry, just south of Valentia Island. The Irish name, An Caladh, translates simply as “the ferry,” which tells you exactly what this place was built to do. It’s the crossing point.
Access to the island now runs over the Maurice O’Neill Memorial Bridge. That’s the R565 road. The bridge opened in 1970. It was named for a member of the IRA executed in 1942. He was involved in the shooting dead of Detective George Mordaunt in Dublin. The structure spans the narrow water between the peninsula and the island, replacing the old ferry service that gave the village its nickname.
You’ll see the place called Port Magee or even Magee’s Port in older records. The name comes from Captain Theobald Magee. He was an 18th-century smuggler who had served in the French navy. Magee settled in the village and ran his trade out of the small harbour. The name stuck.
The harbour is effectively the village itself. It’s a narrow sweep of water where boats still put out. The crossing to the island is the thing the village has always been. Everything else has grown around that single function.
In summer, Portmagee is the west-coast departure point for the Skellig Islands. The Valentia crossing remains the practical route for anyone coming up the Iveragh from the south. The village sits at the narrow point where the Iveragh meets the island. A walk around the harbour is the standard loop: you see the boats, the bridge, and the headland above. It’s short and direct.
Portmagee is a short drive west of Cahersiveen on the Iveragh road. The bridge to Valentia is right in the village. Skellig boat season runs in summer, but it’s weather dependent. Confirm the current schedules and fares before travelling.

Portmagee puts the harbour, the bridge and the Skellig boats all in one walk — the Valentia crossing is the bonus.
