The town
Dingle (An Daingean, meaning “fort of Ó Cúis”) is the only town on the Dingle Peninsula (Corca Dhuibhne). It sits on the Atlantic coast in County Kerry, south-west Ireland. The location is about 50 kilometres southwest of Tralee and 71 kilometres northwest of Killarney.
Tourism, fishing, and agriculture drive the local economy. Dingle Mart still handles livestock for the surrounding countryside. It is a Gaeltacht town. In the 2016 census, 13.7% of the population spoke Irish daily. The sign on the gate confirms this in both languages.
The number one
For thirty-seven years, the town had a dolphin mascot. Fungie was an adult bottlenose dolphin. He courted human contact in Dingle Bay starting in 1983. By 2020, he was gone.
Visitors still crowd the quay hoping for a look. The reward is not guaranteed. The town kept the habit of watching the bay for him. That routine remains.
The people
The 2022 population was 1,671. That is a decrease from the 2016 census. Dingle has the oldest average age for a town in Ireland: 44.4 years.
The town is the base for Slea Head, the Blaskets, and the western peninsula. The walk through the street, quay, and market usually happens before heading out to the headlands.
Practical
Dingle is at the western end of the peninsula road. From Killarney, allow roughly an hour and a half. From Tralee, it is about forty minutes.
Pair it with Slea Head for a full day. Take the headland in the morning. Save the town and harbour for the afternoon light.
