Benbulbin is a 526 m table mountain in the Sligo country, characterized by a flat top and a sheer face. It is the peak referenced in Yeats’s poetry and serves as the primary hiking destination for the area.
Benbulbin stands at 526 m. It belongs to the Dartry range, the most recognizable peak in what locals call Yeats country. The massif has steep sides and a flat top. Geologists formed it as a nunatak during the last ice age. From the summit, the entire Sligo country spreads out below. The peak gave its name to Yeats’s poem “Under Ben Bulben”. The flat top and the single great face define the shape that the poem, and every photograph, attempts to capture.
Start the standard route from Strandhill. The climb out of the village is steady. You cross the open ground below the face before reaching the top. The view runs the length of the coast from the summit. Sligo Bay sits to one side. The open Atlantic lies to the other. Allow a full day for the walk from the village. The flat top is a long walk in itself. The famous Pulpit, a rock outcrop on the edge, is the spot most people photograph.
The Irish name is Binn Ghulbain. Binn means peak. Gulbain may mean beak or jaw. It might also refer to Conall Gulban, a son of Niall of the Nine Hostages, who is associated with the mountain. The stone is Carboniferous limestone over mudstone. It was laid down in a shallow sea some 345–330 million years ago. Glaciers moving from northeast to southwest cut the shape during the last ice age. Sligo County Council designates the mountain a County Geological Site. The geology is part of what is being looked at, not just the view.
The mountain is open ground. Weather on the top can differ greatly from conditions in the village. In a storm, the face and the top are closed country. The walk is easy on a good day. It becomes serious on a bad one. The difference is the mountain itself.

A base within the hour of the start makes the walk a choice rather than a compromise.
